The "Goat Camp" is the term used by our late dad & father-in-law, EJ Bennett, to refer to a piece of land he purchased for his young family back in the 1950's. The physical location is northwest of Roswell on West Pine Lodge Rd. It had been a functioning farm or cattle ranch years before dad bought it. Some of the original out buildings still remain - the bunk house is now used for storage, while the well house is still functional. The original family brand, filed by HH Bennett was the "Circle V". Several attempts were made to retrieve the original brand, but were unsuccessful.
The old homestead proved to be too small for the family as it originally consisted of an "eat-in" kitchen, a bath room, and a living room that also served as sleeping quarters for the three family members. Two bedrooms were added to the north side. The next addition was to the south and included a dining room plus a laundry room and entrance to the southwest. A fire in 2003 nearly destroyed the house, completely gutting the interior and causing major damage to the roof.
Sharon & John acquired the property from the family estate in 2011 and set out to re-acquire the family brand. Having been interested in "cowboy cooking" for many years, and after acquiring various dutch ovens, frying pans, enamelware dishes, and more over the years, the logical next step was to find a chuck wagon to haul it all. We also were able to acquire a new brand (seen above) for the Lonely Goat - the Quarter-circle V.
The wagon featured in the photos is an 1800's Indiana wagon that has been restored to better than new configuration. The Indiana & LaFayette wagon was found near Cloudcroft, NM, and was a line wagon for the Circle Cross ranch which was owned and operated by NM's own Oliver Lee. The original condition and more can be seen in our photo gallery.
